The cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is packed with star power, just like its 2023 predecessor, the blockbuster titled The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Chris Pratt voices the title character, with Charlie Day playing Mario’s brother, Luigi. The rest of the cast is just as impressive.

As the sequel’s synopsis reads, “Mario and Luigi, the twin plumbers, apply their ‘let’s-a-go’ attitude to solve everyday problems all over their new home of the Mushroom Kingdom. As they support Princess Peach, and work to reform a miniaturized imprisoned Bowser, they meet a new companion ― Yoshi. Princess Peach’s birthday party sparks a galactic adventure, sending the brothers into space to stop Bowser Jr.’s wicked ambitions and save Rosalina.”

How is Princess Peach different in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie than in the first film?

“It’s a little different this time, because I feel like Princess Peach, she’s on this journey of self-discovery,” TODAY co-anchor Craig Melvin told Taylor-Joy during her March 18 visit to the morning show. “She leaves the Mushroom Kingdom.”

In the earlier iterations of the Super Mario video games, Princess Peach was often a damsel in distress. But by the end of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the character was coming into her own — showing herself to be just as important to the defeat of Bowser as Mario and Luigi.

“I think she’s still deeply empathetic, but she’s also taking care of what she needs in this moment,” Taylor-Joy said on TODAY of Princess Peach’s role in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. “She wants to find out where she comes from. She’s on a quest for adventure — and yeah, prioritizing herself a little bit more.”

Taylor-Joy told Melvin on TODAY, “I was so excited when the filmmakers told me that this was the journey that Peach was going to go on, so I think I just approached it with a curiosity and again, an excitement that I was going to get to learn more about this character that I love so much.”

“I wanna do a cross-country road trip,” Taylor-Joy revealed.

Melvin responded, “That’s a long time in a vehicle.”

“That’s a long time in a vehicle,” the actress admitted. “Luckily, I like my friends. So I think, hopefully, that will be okay, and I want to see America. I feel very fortunate that I have an American passport, but I have not really seen the country, so I want to go look at some beautiful landscapes.”

Taylor-Joy was born in Miami, Florida, while her parents were on vacation there, but grew up in Argentina and in London.
