In an ever changing landscape of MMA organizations, it is rare when a promotion can catch the eye of fans and provide a new take on the traditional format of mixed martial arts. This is exactly what the upstart league called Black Combat have done in South Korea.
Black combat was founded in 2022 by Pyungwha Park, also known as “Godfather Black”, with the hopes of providing a new platform for fighters in South Korea and Asia as a whole. Originally, Black Combat was started as a way to settle internet conflict between Pyungwha Park and another MMA content creator. They went back and forth, accusing each other of stealing content and calling each other out to fight in various rulesets. Rather, Park ended up fighting against a an Asian Games gold medalist boxer under an mma ruleset as the first event for Black Combat, and leveraged this momentum to launch the professional promotion. This makes Black Combat one of the only MMA promotions that was started by a fan/content creator, who became a successful fighter, and then a successful promoter.
Owner of Black Combat, Pyungwha Park
Traditionally, ROAD FC has been the primary organization for many fighters in this region, but with a waning event schedule and few stars, promotions like Zombie Fight Night (owned by former UFC fighter Chan Sung Jung), and Black Combat have found an opportunity to thrive. With martial arts being so popular in this area, Black Combat saw an opportunity to capitalize on the recent boost the sport as seen in the region. The organization has managed to host over 15 successful events, even selling out some of the larger arenas in the country. At Black Combat 17, they sold over 10,000 tickets to the event, a landmark achievement in global MMA. With the recent start of their World Cup Tournament, there seems to be little in the way of BC becoming a major player both in the region and worldwide.
What makes Black Combat unique?
Black Combat operates differently than many other MMA organizations. They have a multi tiered event structure, all the way from the prospect series called Black Cup, which gives an opportunity to young fighters to make their name with the promotion, in a TUF style reality show competition. The second tier of event is Black Combat Rise, comparable to a UFC fight night where contenders have a chance to prove their skill and value at the top of the division. The third tier and most important of the events is the numbered cards. These typically host the title fights, and are filled with the top fighters in the promotion. Between these various shows, Black Combat has built a successful ecosystem that consistently generates new talent for the organization.
Black Combat also believes that ring names are a critical part of promoting fighters. The athletes typically go by their nickname as opposed to their full name, and lean heavily into the character that their nickname suggests. For example, someone nicknamed “wolf” will be heavily featured with wolf skin, animals, and other wild details in the build up to the fight. The promotion has also learned into face to face interviews between fighters before matches, leading to tension and dramatic moments. This style of promotion is evident through the exceptional fight posters and promotional material Black Combat produces.
Black Combat owns and operates a headquarters, which contains the business offices, the Black Combat Gym, Black Agora (space for events), and more. This allows the promotion to keep everything functioning under one roof and allows simplicity with scheduling of various events.
The most unique project to date for Black Combat is their newly debuted World Cup tournament, in which teams of fighters representing various regions and countries will battle across an 8 team bracket to determine the top fighting country. The prize for this tournament is ₩200,000,000, which equates to $135,000 USD. Very few organizations aside from OKTAGON MMA offer this level of prize money for a tournament, and the result of this has been an influx of international talent into Black Combat.

What’s next for Black Combat?
Black Combat recently hosted the first round of their World Cup tournament, with Team USA defeating Team Korea Alpha 4-3. The schedule for the first round of the tournament is as follows:
March 28th: Team Japan vs Team Brazil
April 11th: Team Mongolia vs Team China
April 25th: Team Eurasia vs Team Korea Omega
Outside of the World Cup events, nothing is currently announced. The rosters of the World Cup team are slowly being announced as the events occur as well. Black Combat events can be watched on their YouTube channel for a subscription price of $20 USD. Between the multiple tiers of events, Black Combat hosts roughly 1 event per month, in addition to the other content they produce. While most of the promotional material is in Korean, the organization is working to provide more coverage in different languages as the organization grows.
With discontent in the current UFC structure, and the sport of MMA consistently growing, Black Combat is at the forefront of the Asian market as one of the top new MMA promotions to watch going into 2026.
