If you’ve ever had the misfortune of attending an AI conference (and I use “misfortune” loosely, since the canapés are usually excellent), the conversation runs on a predictable track. Experts discuss all the things we don’t know about AI, from the humdrum (will it put radiologists out of a job?) to the fantastical (will AI become sentient and eat us with a side of fava beans and a nice Chianti?).

What you don’t hear discussed is the one thing we actually do know for certain. We know, as surely as we know that Barnaby Joyce wears a hat, that when highly evolved primates like Homo sapiens experience prolonged periods of uncertainty, they become anxious, manipulable and foolish.
