Hawks star Nick Watson claims a disgruntled Sydney Swans fan threw a projectile at him after Thursday’s clash at the MCG.
The Hawks soared over the Swans, winning 99-82 in front of a home crowd with Watson kicking the final goal.
Watson told Nova on Friday morning that he had engaged in a cheeky sledging match with a pack of Sydney supporters after the game when one of them hurled a Coke bottle on to the field.
The AFL said the thrower was not part of the Swans cheer squad.
“They were throwing Coke Zero cans out there,” Watson said.
“I saw one of them go straight past me.
“It just landed right next to us, lucky it didn’t hit any players.
“I was giving (the Swans fans) heaps, but I am not sure a Coke Zero bottle to the face would have been nice.”
The Herald Sun had images showing the Coke bottle sailing over Watson’s head after the final siren.
Watson told Nova hosts Jase Hawkins and Lauren Phillips that he had no idea if any action had been taken against the person who threw the bottle.
“I don’t know what happened to the guy (who threw it),” he said.
The AFL said it was working with police and the MCG to investigate the matter, with the alleged bottle thrower still to be identified.
“A patron threw a soft drink bottle at the final siren towards Hawthorn players,” an AFL spokesman said.
“The alleged offender was not from the Swans cheer squad and his identity is currently unknown.
“We have the best fans in the world, but throwing objects at players will never be acceptable and if caught you will lose the privilege of being able to attend the footy.
“Victoria Police will now investigate the matter with assistance from the MCG, which will provide all relevant information.”
