Peter V’landys has revealed an extra incentive for players to join the PNG Chiefs when the expansion team joins the competition in 2028.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported on Sunday that all third-party earnings will also be tax-free on top of the salaries included in the NRL salary cap.

V’landys confirmed the stance, which will no doubt pique the interest of players.

“Any revenue they earn in PNG is tax-free. It’s like you’re doing a tax return in PNG, it’s all tax-free. Playing in PNG will set them up for life,” the ARL Commission boss said.

There is proof of potential third-party earnings for players as well, with retired PNG international Justin Olam earning up to $300,000 per year on top of his salary through personal sponsorship agreements while he was playing.

With the salary cap for NRL clubs continuing to rise and tax-free earnings on offer, the latest news will only further tempt stars to make the leap.

It’s the latest boost for the league’s 19th franchise, who have the backing of V’landys as well as both the Australian and PNG governments.

“We used to have the Brisbane Broncos as a one-city team. This is a one-country team, where people are fanatical about rugby league,” V’landys said.

“Can you imagine 10 million people following one team? It’s a monopoly because it’s the only sport that’s played there. People don’t realise how big PNG is going to be.”

Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston has already confirmed his interest in playing for the Chiefs once they enter the competition, while many others are expected to follow.
