Queensland Bulls batter Hugo Burdon has ensured the Gold Coast Dolphins have both hands on the Cam Battersby Cup after a record effort in the KFC Queensland Premier Grade Final.
Burdon bcame the first player to score a triple century in the Final, as he and former Queensland Under-19 batter Stephan Muller took the game away from Northern Suburbs on the first weekend of the Final at Allan Border Field.
Burdon finished his season on the highest of highs with 340, the second highest individual score in the history of the competition, behind only Austraian player Matt Renshaw (345).
The remarkable effort, which also featured Muller finishing 272 not out, saw the Dolphins finish 3-630 declared.
It is all the more remarkable considering that when play started yesterday morning, Norths’ Queensland quick Sam Skelly had taken two wickets in an over to have Gold Coast reeling at 2-1.
Skelly finally got the third wicket to fall, when Burdon fell some 629 runs later.
In all, the Vikings used 10 bowlers as the Gold Coast ground on to a massive first inninsgs score to put them in the box seat to take out the club’s first two-day title since 2008-09.
