Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett has delivered a trademark press conference after his side’s narrow win against the Wests Tigers.

After taking an early lead, South Sydney went into the break down 14-12 before rallying back in the second half and holding on for a 20-16 win.

Latrell Mitchell and Alex Johnston’s tries in the second half were enough as the Tigers were left reeling by injuries to Jarome Luai and Adam Doueihi.

Despite the win – the second of the year for Souths – the coach wasn’t happy.

“Not much,” Bennett replied when asked for his thoughts on the win.

He then urged the reporters in the room to speak to captain Cameron Murray about his thoughts, but things were quickly directed back to Bennett.

“You haven’t got the message yet have you? I’m not pleased,” he said.

“Nothing pleased me. The only thing that pleased me was when [club debutant] Moala [Graham-Taufa] came off and gave me the chocolates around his neck.

“We’re better than what we played tonight. If we keep playing like that we won’t be in contention for anything, except bottom end of the competition.”

While the performance didn’t put a smile on Bennett’s face, the one player who clearly impressed him was fullback Jye Gray, who scored a try and set up another.

The pint-sized No.1 was at his brilliant best and continues to play above his weight, especially improving his work under the high ball.

“It’s quite remarkable what he does and how he gets it done,” Bennett said.

“He’s got confidence in himself and belief in himself. He knows he’s going to have bigger guys jumping on him, so he’s honed his technique to be able to handle that situation.”

Souths have the bye next weekend before a traditional Good Friday clash against the Bulldogs in round five.
