Matt Fitzpatrick redeemed himself for his late blunder at The Players Championship with a birdie at the last to win the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort in Florida.

A week ago, the 2022 US Open champion bogeyed the 72 hole to hand victory to Cameron Young, but this time around he was the one who came home with a wet sail to claim the US$1.638 million (A$2.34m) winner’s cheque.

Fitzpatrick hit a crunching drive down the middle of the fairway on 18 to leave himself 106 metres into the green.

A nice wedge approach left roughly four metres for birdie, a nervy putt which he sank to finish one shot clear of America’s David Lipsky.

“Yeah, I’ll be honest, it wasn’t an ideal putt that I felt like,” Fitzpatrick said.

“It was a nice right-to-lefter, terrible, but me and my putting coach, Phil, have been working on trying to have less acceleration in my stroke, and it comes out more on the uphillers.

“So I wouldn’t say I was overly keen on it, given my putting performance today. But yeah, to get it done like that was special.”

The Englishman signed off on a bogey free three-under par final round of 68.

It was Fitzpatrick’s second successive blemish free round for the tournament as he strung together rounds of 68-69-68-68 to finish 11-under par overall.

The victory was the 31-year-old’s third on the PGA Tour and his 12th professional triumph.

Post-round, he was incredibly proud of himself for bouncing back from the heartbreak of the previous event.

“Yeah, I think the big thing was I felt like I was playing well. I was playing well going into this week, obviously wanted to continue that and I felt like I had confidence it in myself to do so,” Fitzpatrick said.

“Then obviously to sort of do that over four round was special this week.”

Xander Schauffele shared the low round of the day honours with Argentine Emiliano Grillo after firing a six-under par final round 65.

Schauffele jumped into a tie for fourth at -8 as a result.

The two-time major champion has recorded back-to-back top tens in positive signs before The Masters next month.

“I think so, yeah,” the world No.7 replied when asked if he feels he is in good form ahead of Augusta National.

“There’s very particular things you need to work on to play well at a course like Augusta. So trying to get that imagination to work in Florida, there aren’t too many hills and mounds to practice off of like there are in Georgia.

“So just kind of use your imagination to the best of your ability to get ready.”

Meanwhile, for Lipsky, the result may be life-changing.

The 37-year-old came into this week with conditional status, but his runner-up finish is set to open several doors.

“Oh, massive. Because it gets you into so many more events,” he said.

“You don’t feel like you’re behind the 8-ball, especially going into the summer.

“So this week was an awesome week and I’m really looking forward to seeing what events I get into the rest of the year and trying to play my way into those playoffs.”

The English flag was prominent at the top of the leaderboard with Jordan Smith (-9) finishing third, while Marco Penge was in a share of fourth alongside Schauffele and overnight leader Sungjae Im.

Australia’s Karl Vilips finished in a tie for 64th at +2 after a final round 73.
