Philadelphia, PA –Â In a hard-fought WNIT second-round matchup, the La Salle women’s basketball team delivered a clutch 70-61 victory over Binghamton on Monday night at John E. Glaser Arena. The Explorers erased a third-quarter deficit with a dominant closing stretch, advancing to 19-13 on the season while Head Coach Mountain MacGillivray celebrated his 100th career win.
Neither team led by more than nine points in a contest that featured 10 lead changes and eight ties. La Salle found itself trailing 52-51 heading into the fourth quarter after Binghamton surged ahead with a late third-quarter run. Refusing to let the season slip away, the Explorers responded with a 19-9 run in the final period.
Aryss Macktoon starred in the postseason moment, turning in her eighth double-double of the year with 22 points, 10 rebounds and four assists, matching her season high in assists. Macktoon provided the spark at both ends, shooting 10-for-20 from the field and grabbing two steals. Ashleigh Connor joined the highlight reel by pouring in 17 points, adding six rebounds and hitting six of seven from the line. Joan Quinn rounded out the top efforts with 10 points and three assists, going a perfect four-for-four at the stripe.
The Explorers shot 44.4 percent from the field and 81 percent at the free-throw line, capitalizing on their opportunities in a back-and-forth contest. As a team, La Salle forced Binghamton into just 11.8 percent shooting from deep and used timely defense to limit the Bearcats to nine fourth-quarter points.
Following the victory, the Explorers will take on Army on Wednesday in the Super 16. Game time will be released tomorrow.
