Partick Thistle narrowed the gap on Scottish Championship leaders St Johnstone to five points with a deserved victory over Raith Rovers at Stark’s Park.

The visitors were the stronger side before the break and made their pressure count five minutes before half-time.

Excellent work from Aidan Fitzpatrick down the left created the opening and his cross into the six-yard box found defender Ben McPherson to fire home from close range beyond goalkeeper Josh Rae.

Rovers midfielder Dylan Easton was denied by the crossbar after the break, while Rae superbly tipped wide a powerful, 25-yard Fitzpatrick’s drive.

Home substitute Richard Chin squandered a golden chance from six yards, slicing his effort straight at the goalkeeper, before winger Fitzpatrick sealed the points by firing home from 10 yards.

Thistle host Ross County on Friday night knowing a win will narrow the gap further before their title rivals face Queen’s Park the following day.
