NAPA, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men’s golf team fired a final-round 280 to climb the leaderboard and secure a seventh-place finish at The Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational Monday, March 24. The Eagles were led by Robby Turnbull, who tied for 14th in the two-day tournament played at the Silverado CC & Resort – North Course in Napa, Calif.

As a team, the Eagles finished seventh at 6-over 858 (283-295-280) to post the 21st-lowest 54-hole score in program history. Brigham Young University ran away with the team title as the Cougars shot 54-under 810 while Santa Clara University was the runner-up at 2-under 835. Tohuko Fukushi University of Japan, the defending champion, the University of San Francisco, and the University of North Alabama each tied for third at 20-under 844.

Individually, Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College) was the top EMU finisher as he tied for 14th at 5-under 211 (71-72-68) to post his second under-par tournament score this season. One of the players he tied with was teammate Tim Chan (Hong Kong, China/New Mexico JC / VCU), who competed as an individual. Chan finished at 5-under 11 (73-70-68) to post his second-best score of the season behind only the 209 he carded as the West Bay Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 5-7).
Charlie Box (Leicester, England/Hutchinson CC) also secured a top 25 finish as he tied for 23rd at 3-under 213 (69-73-71). Box excelled on the par-4s, finishing seventh in the tournament field in par-4 scoring at 4-under to finish under par of the seventh time in nine tournaments this year. His opening-round 69 marked his 33rd career round in the 60s and his 11th this year.
Leo Mihaich (Bell Ville, Argentina/Oklahoma Christian) and Joshua Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) tied for 41st at 1-over 217. Mihaich (70-76-71) was consistent throughout the event, recording 37 pars to tie for seventh-most in the field while improving on his season-best score by six strokes. Rory McDonald-O’Brien (Shrewsbury, England/South Carolina Aiken) rounded out the lineup in a tie for 81st as his second-round score was disqualified, leaving him with rounds of 73 and 72 in the event.

Eastern remains in California for its next event that tees off in two days when the Eagles take part in The Goodwin, hosted by Stanford University on the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif. The three-day event will be played March 26-28 and will feature 30 teams.
