Brisbane’s Sam Marshall is set to ponder his contract call as rival clubs prepare to make a play for the 2025 premiership player.

That’s according to AFL Media’s Cal Twomey, who reports “Victorian clubs have been closely watching Marshall given his links to the state”.

While Marshall is a product of the Brisbane Lions Academy, he spent the final years of his schooling at Melbourne Grammar.

The 20-year-old midfielder, who was subbed out of the Lions’ flag triumph after four disposals, has been overlooked at selection by Chris Fagan thus far in 2026.

Also a Sandringham Dragons product, Marshall played 11 senior games last year for averages of 11.2 disposals, 1.6 inside-50s and 0.7 clearances — though he was either the sub or subbed off six times.

In his draft year, Marshall was considered an accumulating onballer with good inside-outside balance.

The reason Marshall comes out of contract this year and not next is because he was Pick 25 in the 2024 national draft — outside the top 20 that triggers a three-year rookie deal.

Marshall was named as an emergency for the Lions’ Round 1 loss to the Swans, with the likes of James Tunstill and draftee Dan Annable picked ahead of him.

PIES SET FOR IRISH EXPEDITION

Collingwood is reportedly set to embark on an overseas recruiting “mission” to a place they’ve had success in past years.

Magpies recruiting staff will imminently travel to Ireland to find fresh talent, according to Seven’s Mitch Cleary.

Marty Clarke is the most well-known Irish Magpie, playing 73 AFL games between 2007-14 after being snapped up in the 2006 rookie draft.

Mark Keane, meanwhile, is the one who got away from Collingwood, initially recruited to the club in 2019 before homesickness saw him return to the motherland before the 2022 season.

Ahead of the 2023 campaign, he was recruited to the Crows, where he has developed into one of the league’s premier key defenders, making last year’s All-Australian squad.

“The Pies have had success in Ireland in the past … they’re heading back — Shannon Collins and Shane O’Bree from the recruiting mission are going on a recruiting mission to Ireland to try and find the next Marty Clarke,” Cleary told Channel Seven.

“Other clubs have had differing success in recent years out of Ireland — the Pies are going back there in coming weeks.”

Collingwood’s AFLW side has recruited several Irish women in recent years, including Sarah Rowe, who’s played 75 games since joining the club in 2019.
