SHANE van Gisbergen will start from the front row of both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series races at Watkins Glen International this weekend.

In the Cup Series qualifying, the Kiwi sat on top of the timing charts for most of the session until he was displaced late by Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney.

Tomorrow, he will look to secure his fifth career Cup Series win, which would be a record for a rookie driver in the Cup Series.

SVG currently shares the benchmark with Jimmie Johnson (2002) and Tony Stewart (1999).

In today’s short 20-minute-long practice session, van Gisbergen registered the sixth fastest time.

Meanwhile, in the Xfinity Series, van Gisbergen will also line up from the second position, after being topped by JR Motorsports teammate Connor Zilisch in qualifying.

Earlier in practice, he set only the eighth fastest time, although he was involved in a bizarre incident at the end of the session involving two other cars.

This morning, he is shooting for the fifth win of his Xfinity Series career to date.

The Xfinity Series race is scheduled for a 5am AEST start, with the Cup Series race slated for a 4am Monday green flag.
