Every year, there’s a lot of hype and fanfare around two major product launches for smartphone giant Samsung.

Their S series Galaxy smartphones kick off the year as Samsung’s biggest-selling models, their “flagship”, shall we say. Then, later in the year, for the last six years, Samsung’s Z Series devices, their foldable smartphones, got plenty of attention.

Missing the hype is a volume seller at a lower price point known as the A Series, and the latest generation has just been announced.

Launching April 10, the Samsung Galaxy A37 and A57 will join the already available and even more quietly launched A17 as value options for people who don’t long for the latest and greatest and, in many cases, “just need a phone”.

Despite being the affordable siblings in the Samsung smartphone line-up, the Galaxy A Series are, in fact, an outstanding choice for a vast majority of people.

This year’s A37 and A57 are even harder to distinguish from each other than ever before. Basically, the metal frame of the A57 is noticeably blendable, but both devices share the same design theme, the same lens camera on the back, and, although they have different names, the colours are remarkably similar too.

In reality, the smartphone market can be measured by price with slight variations in between. Samsung itself has a range of “good, better and best” with the A Series being the ”good” and the S26 Ultra and Z Fold Series being the “better” and “best”.

Interestingly, that same scale can be seen within each of those series of phones. Here with their Galaxy A Series, the A17 is a “good” phone, the A37 is “better” and the A57 the “best” of the three.

When choosing an A Series phone, you can certainly assume that the individual features will get better the more you spend.

While all these phones will do a great job of helping you churn through your emails, check social media or play games like Words with Friends, they’ll also take great photos. It’s all just a sliding scale of how great and how snappy the performance will be.

The A57 is going to take the best photos of these phones. It also has the better screen and faster processor. How important is a better camera or a better screen? That’s what would be the deciding factor in choosing between each phone.

For example, on the A57, there’s a new focus on making it faster to switch between camera modes and modes, all while snapping a photo.

This lag may or may not be noticeable to average users, but it’s a clear difference between a premium smartphone and the more affordable alternative. By focusing on this, Samsung is aiming its enhancements at the bulk of users.

A 50-megapixel sensor leads both the A37 and A57 cameras, with improved photography in low light, as well as better video with HDR capabilities.

You’ll also now get AI-based recognition and scene optimisation; the camera is working with you to get the best photos possible.

AI isn’t the leading feature of these phones; however, it’s looming ready to help you with things like Best Face suggestions if you’ve got multiple group photos and are trying to find one where everyone is smiling – Best Face combines faces from multiple photos to give you the perfect outcome. Likewise, Auto Trim for easier video editing.

It’s little things like that which differentiate the A57 from the A37, though I’d wonder how many people are desperate for those AI-style features when there’s a price saving by opting for the more affordable A37.

Another differentiator is the screen; it’s Super AMOLED versus Super AMOLED+ – the plus might be the thing that gets you over the line, presumably.

Both the A57 and A37 feature a massive 5,000mAh battery for up to two days of usage.

The Samsung Galaxy A57 and Galaxy A37 will be available on April 10. The A37 will be $599, and the A57 will be $749.

The A57 comes in Awesome Navy and Awesome Lilac, while the A37 comes in Awesome Lavender and Awesome Charcoal.
