The Royal Air Force boxing team made history on the south coast after winning the Inter Services team boxing title in Portsmouth, their first since 1972.

In the biggest boxing showcase on the military boxing calendar, the RAF won four of the seven bouts that counted towards the team title, with vice-captain Sergeant Cameron Lewis winning the deciding bout when he beat the Army’s Corporal Aaron Doherty by a unanimous decision.

A traditionally dominant British Army team came into the night with a 2-0 lead over their competitors with two walkover bouts to begin the evening.

But besides Terri-Leigh Stewart’s win in the women’s lightweight division over her RAF opponent Carys Mainwaring, which didn’t count towards the team title, the Army shockingly didn’t win a single bout counting towards the team effort.

The home team, the Royal Navy, weren’t able to field enough boxers on the night to contend for the team title due to injuries and availability.

However, the Navy were still able to put on a show for their home crowd supporters with their three boxers, Marine William Winwood, Marine Connor Fanning and Marine Dominik Zieba, winning their fights.
