The people behind psychiatry’s most important guide have, for a long time, deliberately avoided theories on the root causes of mental illness.

That may soon change.

In January, the American Psychiatric Association published five papers outlining its proposals for the next edition of the DSM.

Significantly, the DSM’s Structure and Dimensions Subcommittee has proposed a “more flexible” model for the DSM, which would incorporate some of the factors that may underlie mental illness and move away from rigid diagnostic categories.
