In a case of history repeating itself, the deterioration of Anthony Seibold’s relationship with veteran forward Jake Trbojevic is reportedly one of the reasons behind his shock sacking as Manly coach.

Seibold was axed three games into a two-year extension after Manly dropped their first three games of the season all at home at Brookvale, prompting club powerbrokers to cut ties with the coach.

Scott Penn and the ownership group put Seibold’s sacking down to a lack of success at home to start the season and not wanting the conjecture over his future to affect the team and results moving forward.

However, Triple M’s Ben Dobbin revealed there was a breakdown in the relationship between Jake Trbojevic behind the scenes that contributed to Seibold’s shock departure.

Speaking on Triple M’s Sunday Sin Bin, Dobbin claimed the fractured relationship between Seibold and Trbojevic had deteriorated significantly, citing a breakdown in trust and communication that saw the coach lose the playing group.

“Jake Trbojevic— I’m going to name him — he’s been treated poorly. He’s a club leader,” Dobbin said.

“Jake Trbojevic is a leader and that club is void of leadership. Jake and Tom are the two leaders.”

In a case of history repeating itself Dobbin revealed Trbojevic went to Seibold to voice his concern over Manly’s game plan, which was similar to the falling out between Broncos captain Darius Boyd during his ill-fated tenure at Brisbane.

“Jake Trbojevic has fronted Seibold, not agreed with the game plan, and said it’s absolutely been over played,” Dobbin said.

“These are the same issues that happened at Brisbane.”

Boyd famously fell out with Seibold after being moved from fullback to centre, which contributed to him losing the playing group months into the second season of a five-year deal.

It appears Seibold did not learn his lesson by overlooking Jake Trbojevic for the Manly captaincy in favour of his younger brother Tom.

While Tom may have been a more logical choice because he is an 80 minute player, Seibold made an awkward situation worse by failing to communicate his decision properly.

“I’ll give you an example,” Dobbin said.

“Tom was told that he was going to be the captain this year, and rightly so because he’s on the field more. Jake Trbojevic, at the end of last season, was captaining the side.

“He’s also the former New South Wales captain. Tom told Jake he’s not going to be the captain this year. You would think that (Seibold would tell that to Jake).

“It’s about communication. That falling out with Jake Trbojevic has been one of the huge issues.”

However, The Daily Telegraph’s Brent Read disputed the severity of the falling out between Seibold and Trbojevic, particularly from the coach’s point of view.

Read was keen to do a story that Trbojevic should retire, but Seibold talked him out of it.

“I spoke to Seibold about it off the record (a few weeks ago),” Read said.

“I said I’m going to do a column basically saying that Jake has to retire, and Anthony Seibold actually talked me out of doing that column.

“He said, ‘Mate, [Jake] has been amazing around the playing group this year. He’s a lot more valuable to us than stats.”
