If Chael Sonnen’s hunch proves to be correct, then fight fans will miss out on Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 3.

Much has been made over Nate Diaz’s recent appearance on “This Past Weekend.” During the podcast appearance, the Stockton native said he didn’t want to be the first opponent for McGregor since he’s returning from an injury. Diaz did express interest in the trilogy if the “Notorious” one makes a successful return.

MMAJunkie.com got a chance to speak to Sonnen, who dropped a big prediction on the likelihood of McGregor and Diaz ever mixing it up one more time.

“I don’t think (the trilogy happens),” Sonnen said. “My guess on Conor is we’re going to get him one more and I think we could really enjoy it. Now if you speak to Conor, and I did, you’re going to get him a minimum of three more times. He’s going to do a couple of fights and go box. … I think we’re going to get Conor for one more fight. I think we’re probably going to miss out on the trilogy. Sadly.”

Diaz is set to compete under MMA rules for the first time since 2022. He’s scheduled to collide with fellow ex-UFC bruiser Mike Perry on the undercard of Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano on May 16. It’ll be Diaz’s first combat sports fight since 2024 when he defeated Jorge Masvidal in a boxing match.

As for McGregor, he’s been working on a UFC comeback fight. UFC CEO Dana White told reporters that while nothing is official, he isn’t ruling out a possible July date for “Mystic Mac.”
