Zach Shields is set to join Zach Cregger as co-writer of the upcoming “Weapons” prequel film that is going by the working title of “Gladys”.
The film is expected to put the focus on Amy Madigan’s memorable villain character, a mysterious orange-haired, massive eyeglass-wearing and doused in make-up elderly woman who suddenly arrives in town and is aunt to one of the kids.
It’s a performance that won Madigan the Oscar for supporting actress the other week, spawned numerous Halloween costumes, and helped the film gross $270 million worldwide, along with garnering some of the best reviews of the year.
Roy Lee and Miri Yoon are returning to produce the film for New Line, Warner Bros. Pictures and their own Vertigo Entertainment label. Cregger is also producing.
Shields is mostly known for his work on Legendary’s Monsterverse, penning “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and co-writing “Godzilla vs. Kong,” as well as being a collaborator of filmmaker Michael Dougherty – co-writing both “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and “Krampus” with him. He also co-executive produced “Lady in the Lake” for Apple, and consulted on “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”.
Cregger’s film adaptation of the video game series “Resident Evil” is slated for release on September 18th 2026. The filmmaker is reportedly aiming to shoot a film this Fall, but it’s not yet clear if it will be “Gladys” or “The Flood” at Netflix.
