Of the teams that will be traveling to Indianapolis for the Final Four in 2026, Illinois is the lone team still in search of the elusive first title. The Fighting Illini have a long history of playing college basketball, but they don’t have the kind of success that UConn, Arizona and Michigan have all found.

Illinois basketball championship historyHas Illinois ever won a National Championship?

Illinois has never won a National Championship despite making the Final Four five different times. In fact, the Fighting Illini have only played in the National Championship game once in its history, a loss to North Carolina in 2005.

Illinois’ Final Four appearances came in 1949, 1951, 1952, 1989 and 2005. In each of those first four appearances, Illinois lost the semifinal game, the first three coming under head coach Harry Combes and the 1989 loss coming with head coach Lou Henson.

When was Illinois’ last final four appearance?

The last time Illinois made the Final Four before 2026 was in 2005, when the team finished the season as the national runner-up. That year, the Fighting Illini were a No. 1 seed but had to erase a 15-point deficit against No. 3 Arizona in the Elite Eight to win the region.

The comeback became Illinois’ most iconic moment in NCAA tournament history, featuring players like Deron Williams, Luther Head and Dee Brown. The Fighting Illini finished regulation on a 20-5 run and ultimately won the game in overtime.

In the Final Four, Illinois beat No. 4 Louisville comfortably 72-57, marking the school’s first ever Final Four win. Prior to that game, the Fighting Illini were 0-4 in Final Four games, failing to advance to the title game each time they appeared in a semifinal.

Head coach Bruce Weber was in his second year with the team after taking over for Bill Self, who left for Kansas two years prior. While Illinois was unable to finish the job against North Carolina in the final game of the year, the team still made history.

What was Illinois’ best March Madness finish?

Illinois’ best March Madness finish came as a runner-up in the 2005 NCAA tournament, when the Fighting Illini lost to North Carolina in the National Championship. Illinois had already set a program record for most wins in a season with 37, a record that still stands, and was looking to win its first national title.

However, the Tar Heels were too much for Illinois, as North Carolina won the game 75-70. Despite Deron Williams, Dee Brown and Luther Head combining to score 50 points, Illinois couldn’t stop North Carolina forward Sean May, who produced 26 points and 10 rebounds.
