Last summer, distinguished endurance cyclist Sofiane Sehili left Portugal, destined for Vladivostok in far eastern Siberia, some 10,000 miles away. His goal was to set the new record for the fastest bicycle crossing of Eurasia, a feat German rider Jonas Deichmann accomplished in just 64 days. Sofiane’s journey was anything but smooth, with plentiful logistical problems, mechanical issues, and detours along the way. His ride ultimately ended abruptly when he was arrested while crossing the Russian border, where he was detained for two months.

Just released, I Need the Sky Above My Head is a new documentary from director Marco Rimondi that offers an inside look at Sofiane’s record attempt and its abrupt, unexpected end. In it, Sofiane shares highlights from the greater ride and details his detention experience and how it shaped him.
