A 67-year-old man has been charged with murder after a woman’s body was discovered south-west of Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.

Victoria Police said the woman, aged 53, was reported missing on Thursday before an investigation was carried out.

“Enquiries by local police and detectives confirmed the Dandenong woman had not contacted family as expected and the circumstances were deemed suspicious,” a police spokesperson said.

On Saturday afternoon, detectives from the Missing Persons Squad found the woman’s body in the vicinity of Little River Road and the Princes Freeway in Little River.

Police said the body had not been formally identified but is believed to be the missing woman.

As part of investigations, the man from Patterson Lakes was arrested on Friday while attempting to board an international flight at Melbourne Airport.

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to appear before a bail and remand court on Sunday.Â
