A man is in a serious condition after being shot in the chest by police following a “confrontation” in Hobart’s northern suburbs early this morning.
Tasmania Police said officers received a call for assistance at a property in Goodwood, north of Hobart, shortly after 4:30am.
They said the man was “outside threatening police” just before 6am and that “following a confrontation, police discharged their firearms, resulting in the man sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest”.

The man received first aid at the scene before being taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he is in a serious but stable condition.
Tasmania Police said the man was alone at the property and that no-one else was injured.
“This is obviously a serious incident that is now under investigation,” Southern District Commander Jason Elmer said.
“It’s an incident that is quite distressing for those parties involved and we are assisting with support to those affected,” he said.
A full Professional Standards investigation is underway.
