CHAPEL HILL – The Elon women’s golf team competed in the North Carolina Challenge Cup on Saturday at Finley Golf Club, finishing sixth in a 13-team field with a 41-over par 601 (302-299) in the one-day, 36-hole event hosted by North Carolina.
 
Elon shaved three strokes off its opening round score with a 299 in the afternoon session after carding a 302 in the morning round.
 
Senior Ashley Lafontaine paced the Phoenix, finishing in a tie for 18th at 7-over par 147 (72-75). Lafontaine opened the day with a two-over 72 and followed with a 5-over 75 to lead Elon across both rounds. Kelly Zhao posted one of the team’s steadiest performances, finishing at 8-over 148 (76-72). Zhao improved by four strokes in the second round with a two-over 72, the low round of the day for Elon.
 
Lilli Downer carded a 13-over 153 (79-74), bouncing back with a five-shot improvement in round two. Lara Rieke added a 13-over 153 (75-78), while Emma Hansen rounded out the lineup at 29-over 169 (82-87).
 
The Phoenix placed three golfers inside the top 35 individually.
