Tragedy strikes during a popular amateur cycling event
The fatal incident occurred during the mass-participation We Ride Flanders sportive, held a day before the professional Tour of Flanders race. Around 14,000 cyclists take part in the event annually, riding across famous Belgian climbs and cobbled roads. The route includes several distances, with the longest stretching nearly 150 miles from Antwerp to Oudenaarde.According to organisers, emergency responders reached the cyclist very quickly after he collapsed near one of the climbs. They attempted resuscitation on-site. However, despite their efforts, the man could not be revived. The organisers later confirmed his death. They expressed deep sorrow over the loss. They said that while safety measures are always in place, incidents like this are devastating and something no event wants to face.The situation was made more concerning as two other riders also required urgent medical attention during the same event. A 57-year-old Dutch cyclist collapsed earlier in the day and needed resuscitation before being taken to hospital. Later, another British rider suffered a similar emergency on a different section of the route and was also hospitalised after being revived.Event organisers explained that medical teams were deployed rapidly in both cases and acted without delay.
