ITHACA, N.Y. – The Brown women’s tennis team (14-6, 1-2 Ivy) defeated the Cornell Big Red (7-9, 0-3 Ivy) 4-2 on the final day of its New York road trip.

“What a battle today against Cornell! We competed with high energy and purpose in doubles at all three lines,” Broadbent Family Head Coach Lucie Schmidhauser said.

The Bears dominated doubles. Anne Yang and Ali Maguy claimed the first win of the day at the third line, beating Dylan Gelber and Martina Marcia, 6-2. Hannah Shen and Abigail Lee secured the point at the first line after a 7-6, 7-3 tie-breaker against Michelle Ryndin and Sage Loudon. With the doubles point clinched, the second-line match between Chloe Qin and Anne Moody, and Victoria Zhao and Andrea Martinez de Los Rios, did not finish.

“Ali and Annie played inspired doubles at line three and closed out their set quickly. Abbey and Hannah beat a tough team at line one doubles with some incredible shot making,” Schmidhauser added.

In singles, the Bears held strong. Hannah Shen lost at the first line to Michelle Ryndin, 6-2, 6-1. Anne Yang won at the fourth line over Dylan Gelber, 6-4, 6-1. Ali Maguy battled at the second line, dropping the first set 4-6, winning the second 6-4, but falling 3-6 to Sage Loudon. Sari Woo rallied at the fifth line, losing set one 4-6, but taking the next two, 6-2, 6-3, over Andrea Martinez de Los Rios. At the third line, Abigail Lee won the first set 6-2 against Victoria Zhao, lost a 6-7(5) tie-break in the second, then won the third set 7-6(5). The sixth line match between Francesca Saroli and Tanya Fan was unfinished; Saroli took the first set 6-2, Fan the second 6-4, and Saroli led 5-4 in the third.

“In singles, the momentum kept swinging wildly during the matches. Annie competed well in the first set, winning some crucial deuce points and then overwhelming her opponent in the second set with some great serving and aggressive play. Sari was a warrior, coming back from a set down to win her match and give us a 3-2 lead. With Abbey and Francesca deep in the third set on their respective courts, the match came down to the wire,” Schmidhauser added.

“Abbey came up huge in critical moments. She elevated her game when it counted the most in the final stages of the match. When down 2-4 in the third set tiebreaker, Abbey was completely fearless in her shot making, going up 6-4 and closing out the match at 6-5 with a great serve and finishing shot pattern,” Schmidhauser continued.

“I’m proud of our team for the effort and fight they showed in both matches this weekend. They compete hard and hold themselves with so much poise and positive body language.” Schmidhauser concluded.
