The death of a child who developed sepsis despite doctors’ best management is still driving Associate Professor Elliot Long to research better ways to diagnose the condition.
The 18-month-old had a sore throat and had not been drinking for a few days so was admitted for rehydration.
“The child didn’t even have a fever when they came in, all of their numbers looked good, they looked good,” recalled Professor Long, a Melbourne emergency physician at the Royal Children’s Hospital and sepsis researcher.
“In the roughly 10 hours after they were admitted, they started to develop a fast heart rate and became a bit lethargic.”
