The University of Wollongong says it is assisting police after a teenager was charged with allegedly manufacturing 3D-printed firearms on its Keiraville campus.

Police received a report around 2:40pm yesterday that a firearm was seen in a room at the university on Northfields Avenue.

Following inquiries, detectives and the Tactical Operations Group, executed a search warrant at the location around 9:45pm.

During the search, officers seized two firearms and electronic devices believed to be linked to the manufacturing process.

An 18-year-old man was arrested and charged with multiple firearm offences, including possession of unauthorised and unregistered firearms, and possession of digital blueprints for manufacturing firearms.

He was refused bail and is due to appear before the Bail Division Court today.

In a statement, the university said police responded swiftly and the situation was resolved peacefully.

“The matter was resolved peacefully and we want to reassure the community that there is no ongoing risk to the safety of our students, staff or visitors and the campus remains open and operating as normal today,” a spokesperson said.

The university said its security team operated 24/7 throughout the year to ensure campus safety.

More to come.
