CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) – SEMO Tennis defeated Lindenwood on the Redhawks’ Senior Day, 5-2.
The Redhawks honored senior Claudia Casas and grad student Kristina Kozakova on Monday, in the team’s final home contest.
SEMO got out to a strong start, clinching the doubles point and eventually the victory after a couple of hours.
After the win, Kozakova spoke on playing her final match in Cape Girardeau, noting the challenges of the semester and the hope for the final stretch of the season.
“It was a hard semester for us, I would say, with a lot of hard matches [in] which some of us might have lost confidence on the way,” Kozakova said. “With this win today and hopefully being second-seeded for the OVC Tournament, some of us are gaining the confidence back.”
The Redhawks currently sit 4th in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, 2-2 on the year. But they could climb as high as 2nd with a win at Tennessee State on Saturday to wrap the regular season.
After the regular season wraps, the OVC Tournament opens in St. Louis on Friday, April 17. While the Redhawks won’t be the favorites, head coach Steve Brooks believes his team has what it takes to potentially come out champions.
“We’ve got enough talent,” Brooks said. “If they show up and they can play, and they’re very resilient–we’ve got a chance. It all comes down to doubles points. If we can win [the] doubles point, we’ve got a really good chance.”
