The next generation Specialized Vado has landed in what will eventually be three versions – the standard Vado 3, the Vado 3 EVO and later, the Vado 3 X too.

Adding weight to the ‘SUV’, hardtail e-MTB, and leisure and commuter categories in one e-bike, the do-it-all build is built for covering ground, whether that’s tarmac, gravel paths, or even some countryside exploration. It does so with plenty of comfort and performance features enabling you to be bold with the rides you take on.

The Levo 4 mid motor brings performance built for off the beaten path exploration to a bike that’s not explicitly an e-MTB. There’s now 50% more torque than the Vado 2 had on tap, now up at 105Nm, providing incredibly powerful climbing control. With that, there’s a 45% peak power upgrade too, now reaching a confidence building 810W – noticeably strong off the lights and when you’re rising to the challenge of steeper hills. In fact, Specialized make a point of saying you can get to cruising speed (15.5mph) in only three seconds with this level of power, though you can control just how much power delivery each assistance mode delivers.

Each of the three models will use the Levo 4 motor and, astonishingly, the same battery performance too, courtesy of a 840Wh downtube battery that promises to deliver at least 5 hours of full power riding anywhere, but used sparingly, a lot more still. You can use the partner app to set ‘Smart Control’ parameters to max out your range, adapted to your riding style.

There is too the option of a 280Wh range extender too, not that you’ll likely need it.

Sticking with the electrics, you can go from 0% to 80% charge in under one hour thanks to fast charging. This is because Specialized now offers an optional 12A, 700W charger. The standard charger is fine, however, achieving 100% charge in a still impressive four hours making it totally compatible with the 9 to 5 workday.

Specialized Vado 3: About the bike

With bike fitting science based on the analysis of 7,000 people, Specialized has optimised the pedalling position to be anatomically supportive and to give the bike an balanced feel on account of a low centre of gravity. These things combine to make for a bike that feels agile and can be fine tuned on the fly courtesy of things like a remote actuated 40mm dropper seatpost that aids mounting and dismounting.

As Specialized puts it ‘We created a position with higher bars and a shorter reach to hold them. The result is a less steep angle for the rider’s back and reduced pressure on the hands, shoulders, and neck.’

That essentially means your body won’t be under any undue strain and pedalling should feel effortless no matter how many miles you rack up.

Found at the cockpit is a seamlessly integrated new 2.2″ scratch resistant MasterMind C4 display that ups the resolution over prior generations and also manages to integrate a Quad Lock mounting system with wireless charging capability (though from the photo above we haven’t yet worked out how).

This touchscreen unit connects via Bluetooth to things like Apple or Garmin watches, putting in two places ride data, heart rate monitoring, which support mode you’re riding in, the remaining range, rider and motor wattage, distance and time riding.

Underneath this Specialized has embedded a front light that’s among the brightest we’ve heard of on a bike like this at 805 lumens on its high beam maximum and 450 lumen on low. That’s good enough to comfortably ride in the woods at night.

At the other end the utility character of this bike means that you have a 27kg capable rear rack, with four elastic straps and an integrated rear brake light, on which to mount accessories. This is enough for a child seat to clip into, if you want to skip the fuel crisis and ride to school. Plus, this same rack has MIK side or Ortlieb QL compatibility for accessories either side, be that bags or baskets. Add to that the ability to bolt a 10kg-ready front rack on and the Specialized Vado 3 can easily hold a weekly shop.
