The European commissioner for defence and Space and former prime minister of Lithuania, Andrius Kubilius, says Europe remains firmly outside the Middle East conflict “for the time being”, but would not rule out the possibility of future participation in the war.

“From the very beginning, we were not participating in any kind of military activities, and we, for time being, we are not planning to do anything else. We shall see how situation is developing, but for now it’s very difficult to predict,” he told ABC Radio National.

Kubilius would not condemn Trump’s threat that “a whole civilisation will die tonight”, and said European leaders were “becoming accustomed to unpredictable statements or decisions” from US President Donald Trump.

“We are not keen to comment on his recent statements.”
