There are 12 second-round matches scheduled on a packed Day 4 of the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, ATP Monte Carlo. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate, but which players will advance?
ATP Monte Carlo Day 4 Predictions
Flavio Cobolli vs Alexander Blockx
Head-to-Head: first meeting
#10 seed Flavio Cobolli survived a tough first-round match against Francisco Comesana and was pumped up after the win. After a challenging start to the season, Cobolli has started to show his best level and finds himself in a good position to make the third round for the first time here. Alexander Blockx got his first tour-level win on clay as he defeated Denis Shapovalov in three sets. It has already been a successful tournament for the 20-year-old, but he will look to extend his run. Cobolli is just the better player currently, which is my primary reason for backing him.
Prediction: Cobolli in 3
Tomas Martin Etcheverry vs Terence Atmane
Head-to-Head: first meeting
This is one of those matches which is not played on the show courts but has the potential to be a thriller. Tomas Martin Etcheverry withstood Grigor Dimitrov’s second-set resurgence and will look to avoid another second-round exit at this tournament. He is playing some great tennis on clay, but his second-round opponent is in pretty good form as well. Terence Atmane cherished the crowd’s support and easily defeated Ethan Quinn in the first round. He has improved on clay, but will it be enough to defeat an established clay courter? I have more faith in the Argentine at this point.
Prediction: Etcheverry in 3
Casper Ruud vs Corentin Moutet
Head-to-Head: Ruud 1-0 Moutet
Former finalist Casper Ruud avenged last year’s loss to Alexei Popyrin with a fantastic first-round performance. He will be hoping to make a deep run here and get closer to the top 10. He has a tricky second-round opponent in the form of Corentin Moutet, who looked in fine touch in the first round. Moutet has a lot of variety in his game, which can trouble many top players, but on clay, Ruud will still back himself to have the upper hand.
Prediction: Ruud in 2
Daniil Medvedev vs Matteo Berrettini
Head-to-Head: Medvedev 3-0 Berrettini
It’s been over four years since these two former top-10 players last played, making this match even more intriguing on paper. Daniil Medvedev has had a couple of good runs at the Monte Carlo Masters in the past, most notably his run to the semifinals in 2019, where he defeated Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas en route. Matteo Berrettini has never done exceptionally well here, but he defeated Alexander Zverev last year and will like his chances against Medvedev on this surface. I think it would be a closely fought match, but Medvedev’s confidence has been much better, and he should prevail.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3
