Could familiarity breed a big-time trade attempt for the Carolina Panthers?
On Tuesday’s episode of the NFL Daily podcast, The Athletic senior writer Jourdan Rodrigue reacted to the recent buzz surrounding New York Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence. With the three-time Pro Bowler reportedly requesting a move, Rodrigue—a former Panthers beat writer—believes Carolina and general manager Dan Morgan should be calling up their pals in the “Big Apple.”

As Rodrigue notes, Morgan and the Panthers do have a connection to Giants general manager Joe Schoen—who began his behind-the-scenes career as a scout for Carolina from 2001 to 2007. The two sides have also done a bit of fairly recent business, with the Panthers having traded pass rusher Brian Burns to Schoen and the Giants back in 2024.
Lawrence could prove to be a stellar fit next to fellow Pro Bowler Derrick Brown, especially following the team’s release of starter A’Shawn Robinson. Outside of Brown, the Panthers’ current group of defensive linemen include Tershawn Wharton, Bobby Brown III, Cam Jackson, LaBryan Ray and Jared Harrison-Hunte.
