Saltwater crocodiles are the largest living reptiles on Earth, but they are far from the biggest crocodiles to ever exist. Prehistoric species such as Sarcosuchus imperator, often called “SuperCroc,” grew to enormous sizes, with estimates suggesting some individuals weighed as much as 17,500 pounds. These massive predators lived millions of years ago and dominated the waterways of their time.
In this A-Z Animals slideshow, we explore what these giant crocodiles likely ate to sustain such incredible size. Based on fossil evidence and comparisons to modern crocodilians, their diet likely included large fish, turtles, and even dinosaurs that came too close to the water’s edge. These apex predators played a critical role in their ecosystems, using sheer size and power to ambush prey and maintain dominance in prehistoric environments.
