Australia’s Jason Day declared he feels “very good” about where his game is at as a maiden green jacket is within reach with one round left to play in The Masters.

Day charged up the leaderboard with a four-under par third round 68, to be only three shots behind co-leaders Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young after 54 holes.

It is a position the Australian knows all too well, having registered five top tens at Augusta throughout his illustrious career.

The former world No.1 is leaning on those experiences ahead of what is set to be a thrilling round, where he hopes to end his 11-year major drought, dating back to the 2015 PGA Championship.

“I think the conditions are going to be kind of similar to what we had today,” Day told Fox Sports’ expert golf analyst Paul Gow at Augusta National.

“Maybe the breeze will be up a little bit more.

“But just trying to get yourself up around the lead on Sunday and anything can happen.

“That’s typical of any tournament, really, but especially here just because of the opportunities you can have out there.

“And also there’s some numbers on the back side that can be had too.

“I feel very good about my game. I’m driving it nice. Lots of quality iron shots. I feel like my touch on the greens is really good too.

“It was a nice par save on 17 which kind of kept the momentum going today.

“And yeah, great (to be in this position).”

Day surged with four birdies in a row from holes to 12 to 15 as he and playing partner Young put on a stripe show.

While they tore up the back nine with the American eventually signing off on a 65, McIlroy stumbled.

The defending champion’s record six-shot lead from the halfway mark vanished as he carded a one-over par 73.

The carnage began when McIlroy dumped his approach into the water on 11 and made double bogey.

The moans, groans and cheers echoed around Augusta National as the course’s famous manual scoreboard were seemingly being updated every few seconds.

As the chasing pack kept making moves, Day said he could not help but stay across the changes.

“I’m a bit of a leaderboard watcher,” he said.

“Just trying to get a gauge on where guys are. Obviously I played with Cam Young today, who’s co-leading right now.

“Just tried to stay, kind of, on par with him even though that was very difficult to do.

“He played very lovely from tee to green. Hit a lot of good putts too.

“Yeah, I mean, I played solid. We’ve got one more day.

“I’m going to do some work on the range, kind of what I did yesterday, and see how we go tomorrow.”

Making Day’s charge all the more impressive was that he tripped up at the very first hole with a bogey.

From then on, besides another dropped shot at the 16th when he failed to save par from the greenside bunker, Day appeared to be in complete control in more friendly conditions than expected.

“Yeah, no, it was nice. The first hole is always a tough one,” he said.

“Came out of the gates with the greens feeling like they were a little slower than normal.

“But I think it brought in a lot of birdie opportunities for a lot of the guys with how receptive the greens were and how playable the greens were.

“Sometimes they definitely feel like they get out of hand.

“I think it’s obviously setting up for a really good Sunday.”
