The Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow could begin production sooner than people think.
James Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet as Superman and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, was a success, having grossed nearly $600 million worldwide despite barely breaking even in terms of its reported eye-watering budget of $400 million. Gunn’s adaptation of one of the most famous superheroes of all time had incredible reviews with an impressive 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an Instagram story posted by Hoult’s wife, Bryanna Holly, she shows how the actor is preparing to return as Lex Luthor in the sequel Man of Tomorrow, as he’s getting his head shaved by one of his children. Holly captioned the post with: “big, bald, and beautiful. Ready for his return @nicholashoult.” It has been reported that production is expected to begin on April 20, with the film’s expected theatrical release set for July 9, 2027.

Before he was Clark Kent, Superman was born Kal-El on a distant planet doomed to destruction. His parents Jor-El and Lara placed him in a rocket ship as an infant, sending him across the cosmos to Earth. What is the name of Superman’s home planet?
AThanagar
BKrypton

The alleged premise of Man of Tomorrow will force an alliance between longtime rivals Superman and Lex Luthor to battle the true evil that is Braniac. The casting of Braniac has been revealed as Lars Eidinger, the supervillain known as one of Superman’s greatest enemies. Braniac was first introduced in Action Comics #242 in 1958, who was described as an extraterrestrial android with a 12th-level intellect, also known as the “Collector of Worlds.”
Gunn will be returning to direct and is also credited for writing the screenplay. Fans don’t have to wait too long to see another DC movie as Supergirl will be released on June 26 later this year, starring House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock as Supergirl/Kara Zor-El and Jason Momoa as Lobo.
A new character will be introduced in Superman’s sequel, Man of Tomorrow, named Maxima, who was first introduced in 1989 in Action Comics #645. She is described as a morally ambiguous queen/alien conqueror who is obsessed with Superman and believes he’s the only being worthy of being her mate and king. Maxima is often said to be an antihero or starts as a super villain before evolving into a hero who joins the Justice League.
Casting for Maxima has been contested, with Gunn shutting down previous claims that it could be Fallout’s Ella Purnell or Industry’s Marisa Abela. However, The Hollywood Reporter recently stated that Adria Arjona, Eva De Dominici, Sydney Chandler, and Grace Van Patten could be the four finalists for the role. DC and Gunn have yet to comment on this update.
Man of Tomorrow will fly into theaters on July 9, 2027.
