R Ashwin has asked Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to provide clarity over his role for IPL 2026. Ashwin was roped in by CSK for 9.75 crore ahead of IPL 2025 and played nine matches for the franchise. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Ashwin has informed CSK he doesn’t mind parting ways with the franchise if he does not fit in their scheme of things.

If the CSK decides to let go of Ashwin, it could open the possibility of roping in Sanju Samson, who has officially asked Rajasthan Royals (RR) to release or trade him before IPL 2026. Ashwin was part of the Rajasthan Royals team before moving to CSK, and if both parties agree, Samson and Ashwin could swap teams. A clear picture would be out when the franchises make any official statement about the players’ request.

If Ashwin decides to leave CSK, he would also have to step down as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy – a position he has held for the past year due to the conflict of interest. Ashwin, who has taken 187 wickets in 227 matches – the fifth most by a bowler in IPL – should draw plenty of interest from teams who will be looking for a quality bowler, but all will depend on what CSK’s plans are for Ashwin. The franchise could hold onto him, release him, or trade him with another player.

Ashwin didn’t have the best outing in the last season, where he took just seven wickets at an economy of 9.74. This was the first time since 2009 that Ashwin played less than 12 games in the season. The veteran, earlier this year, retired from Test cricket.
