One full week of NFL preseason action is in the books, and there’s plenty to talk about.
The biggest story was Friday night, when Browns fifth-round rookie Shedeur Sanders looked solid in his pro debut, going 14 of 23 for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Sanders’ performance, according to Yahoo Sports Senior NFL Reporter Charles Robinson, who was on the scene in Carolina, could edge the Browns into some real QB drama.

So will Sander start the second preseason game. on Saturday vs. the reigning Super Bowl champion Eagles in Philadelphia?

“I’m not there on the game itself,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday. “By Wednesday, Thursday, I’ll have a better feel for the game and how we’re going to handle that and I’ll update you guys, but not there yet.
Monday’s practice, for what it’s worth, hasn’t shed much new light on the pecking order. Joe Flacco, who sat out the preseason opener and is the presumptive QB1, did goal-to-go 11-on-11s with the starters, per ESPN, and third-round rookie Dillon Gabriel was next with the second team. Then veteran Kenny Pickett was up first in red zone 7-on-7s, followed by Gabriel, per The Athletic.

So this situation, surprise surprise, will be one to watch all week.

Clock ticking on Jayden Daniels in Terry McLaurin-Commanders standoff: Things are not hopeless between the Commanders and wide receiver Terry McLaurin, who’s seeking a new contract. But they’re definitely not good, either. The Commanders are firmly tucked into their negotiating trench on one side, and McLaurin and his agent firmly on the other. Right now, those trenches are not close. It’s fair to consider this standoff as capable of making it all the way to the first week of the regular season without McLaurin stepping foot onto the practice field. Barring Daniels injecting himself directly into someone else’s situation — which has never been known to be his persona — his ability to hit the ground running in a season of high expectations for the franchise might be in danger.
Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough outplays Spencer Rattler in preseason debut: Spencer Rattler started the Saints’ preseason opener, but it might not be long before Tyler Shough overtakes him on the depth chart. Rattler, a fifth-round pick last year, had 53 yards on 7-of-11 passing and the offense scored zero points in nearly a full first half with him at quarterback. Rattler exited the game with 1:38 left in the second quarter, and Shough came on for his first NFL snaps. Shough completed 15 of 22 passes for 165 yards, with a 54-yard touchdown, an interception and he took two sacks. He wasn’t perfect but did some things well.
Eagles’ Landon Dickerson carted off with apparent leg injury in practice: Philadelphia Eagles guard Landon Dickerson had to be helped off the field and carted back to the locker room after he went down with a right leg injury on Sunday. Dickerson fell to the ground awkwardly on a pass play late during the team’s open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. Dickerson remained down for several minutes before he was eventually helped up onto the cart and taken off the field. He wasn’t able to place much weight on his leg at all as he left.
