
The Fiji Rugby Players Association Summit kicked off today for a two-day proposed programme at the Novotel Hotel in Lami.
The purpose of this event is to strengthen player presentation, wellbeing, governance, and sustainable development in Fijian Rugby.
Speaking at the summit, Fiji Rugby Union’s Chief Executive Officer – Mr Koli Sewabu who acknowledges representatives from FRPA, Western Sydney University, and others who were present at the event.
Mr Sewabu shared that rugby is mostly a way out for many young Fijians.
He said it is also a way out of poverty for many families.
“For so many of our young Fijian men and women, rugby is not a sport. It is a way out. Out of poverty.”
Mr Sewabu shared that players have been treated as assets over decades and he assured that era is over.
He said the partnership between the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Rugby Players Association — is not just a memorandum of understanding.
He also highlighted the strategic plan for the Fiji Rugby Players Association, aiming to align it with Fiji Rugby.
He stated the plan will be cascaded down to provinces, clubs, and schools, differentiating Fiji from other international associations.
“The FRPA will support grassroots, schools, clubs, and national players, including top international players. Emphasis is placed on the importance of the players welfare, covering various aspects from development to professional representation,” Mr Sewabu said.
The need for good support systems, instructors, and coaches who understand the developmental needs of young players was also highlighted.
Mr Sewabu stressed that FRPA aims to strengthen foundations and provide consistent structures for club rugby and provincial units.
Also present at the summit is Fiji Rugby Players Association Chairman – Mr Ilivasi Tabua, who expressed his gratitude towards the women organizing the event and the people who have joined, emphasizing the importance of welfare and player protection.
Mr Tabua mentioned that this is the first stage of the program, indicating that there is more to come in the future.
He stated the summit has potential for taking this journey forward and empowering institutions to achieve better outcomes.
“The presentation provided today has valuable insights into how best to move forward and improve our practices,” Mr Tabua said.
