Geelong are investigating a potential ACL tear to star ball-winner Gryan Miers in a bizarre medical case that threatens to end his season.

7NEWS understands Miers underwent scans early in the week that revealed damage to his right ACL.

The Cats pointed to knee discomfort on Thursday night and a potential 1-2 week layoff when Miers was removed from the line-up on to face the Western Bulldogs on Friday night.

However, the club is examining follow-up tests and speaking to specialists around whether the injury is a full or partial tear to the ACL.

Miers did not appear on Geelong’s injury list when that was released on Tuesday night.

A full tear would obviously spell the end of his season.

Players have previously managed to return from partial tears within several months, however they often also require full reconstructions which require a 12-month recovery.

Brisbane forward Eric Hipwood last year played for several weeks with a partial tear to his ACL before the injury was discovered. He was subsequently sent for a full knee reconstruction.

Miers passed a fitness test 90 minutes before Geelong’s loss to Hawthorn on Easter Monday and played with heavy strapping on his right knee.

He then played against West Coast six days later without knee strapping.

However, the 27-year-old felt soreness post-match and referenced a feeling of weakness which prompted an MRI.
