RUAPUNA Raceway’s tight pit lane has come into focus following a near miss between James Golding and Macauley Jones during the second race for the weekend.
Golding lost control of his Blanchard Racing Team Mustang over the hump leading into the tight left-hand bend leading into the pit lane.
After clouting the tyre barrier, the #7 machine blocked the narrow entry lane.
With no flag point covering the area, Jones was the next on the scene and completed a neat manoeuvre to avoid the stricken machine, which was attempting a multi-point turn.
“It felt pretty spectacular once I got past him, but in the moment, I had arms and legs going everywhere; it was pretty chaotic,” said Jones on the telecast.
“I saw some dust as I came around, and I couldn’t see the car there because of the wall when you come over the hump, and I was in the air, landing, sort of going ‘This isn’t going to be good!’
“I sort of surprised myself getting away with that one.”
Golding rebounded to place 15th in the race, while Jones finished 18th.
The area was already under the microscope pre-event, with cars accelerating back to around 130km/h before slowing to 40km/h via a temporary tyre chicane.
It was noted that a car in the supporting GT clouted this barrier early on Friday morning.
Race 12 of the season is scheduled for 2:10pm AEST/ 4:10pm NZST today.
