Budget surplus in first quarter of 2026

Greece recorded a budget surplus in the first quarter of 2026, the Finance Ministry said Wednesday, largely through higher than expected tax revenues and lower spending.

A ministry statement said the budget presented a €1.49 billion surplus in January-March, compared to a targeted €111 million deficit and a €1.61 billion surplus a year earlier.

The primary surplus, which excludes debt servicing costs, was €4.39 billion on a modified cash basis, compared to a budgetary target of €2.73 billion and €4.49 billion a year earlier.

Net revenues hit €18.51 billion – €691 million above target – out of which €17.28 billion was in taxes. Expenditure was €17.02 billion, €913 million less than budgeted.
