The Box Hill Hawks VFLW side has escaped elimination with a nail biting one point win over the Bombers at Box Hill city oval on Saturday morning.
The Hawks came out of the gates strong, taking a 2.2 (14) to 1.2 (8) lead at quarter time. But it was far from a comfortable ride, with the Bombers fighting back in the second term to snatch an eight-point lead by the main break. The second half was anyone’s game, but the Hawks held their nerve to clinch a thrilling one-point victory in a nail-biting elimination final, 4.5 (29) to 4.4 (28).
Box Hill avenged their round 12 loss to the Bombers, where they went down by 22 points. However, in this game both sides had their chances to snatch the win, but Box Hill’s strong defensive efforts, combined with their ability to take key marks and drive the ball deep inside 50, ultimately secured the victory.
Tess Cattle continued her strong form heading into finals, racking up a game-high 21 disposals. Jess Matin proved deadly in front of goal, slotting two crucial majors to steer the Hawks to victory, while Amy Cariss-Brett and Mikayla Lee each kicked clever goals to round out the scoring.
The win secures Box Hill a place in the semi-final against Collingwood at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne, 10:05am on Saturday, 16 August. A victory would see the Hawks book their spot in the grand final, while a loss would send them into a preliminary final the following week. With so much on the line, make sure you get down and support the girls on Saturday morning
