West Australian Premier Roger Cook says he has directly warned Prime Minister Anthony Albanese against imposing a new tax on gas exports on the basis it would discourage future investment in the multibillion-dollar industry.
The prime minister has ruled out any new levies on existing gas export contracts, but his government is understood to be considering gas tax changes in the May 12 budget that could affect future supplies. The energy sector opposes any such moves.
