Hungarian Anna Bondar, the No 7 seed, advanced to the final of the Hamburg Open by edging out Slovenian Kaja Juvan 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at Am Rothenbaum on Saturday afternoon.
Champion in 2024 when the tournament was part of the WTA 125 category, Anna Bondar is now back in the final at Hamburg, which has since been upgraded to the WTA 250 category. This marks the first time the Hungarian has reached this stage of the competition on the main tour.
After a nearly three-hour battle the day before against top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, Bondar found the strength to prevail on Saturday despite losing the first set.
I feel really good here
In the next two sets, the Hungarian managed to break early, giving herself some breathing room and allowing her to manage her service games. “I feel really good here, his is my first time reaching a WTA 250 final,” said the day’s winner after her victory over Juvan.
Bondar, ranked No 77, will face the winner of the match between Frenchwoman Lois Boisson, the No 5 seed, and Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, the second seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Hungarian beat Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the top seed (6-7 (1), 6-3, 7-6 (4)), Austrian Sinja Kraus (6-3, 6-2) and German wildcard Noma Noha Akugue (6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3)).
Juvan, ranked No 207, won against Spaniard Leyre Romero Gormaz (6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4), American Louisa Chirico (4-6, 6-4, 6-1) and Russian qualifier Maria Timofeeva (7-6 (4), 6-1) in the previous rounds of the Hamburg tournament.
