Day Two at the Mutua Madrid Open was another pretty standard first-round affair for a two-week Masters 1000; mostly predictable results with a handful of upsets and some close calls.
The clearest low point was Grigor Dimitrov’s straight-sets defeat to 21-year-old Paraguayan qualifier Adolfo Daniel Vallejo (6-4 6-4).
It was the biggest upset of the day and while a big win for Vallejo, it continues a rough patch for the Bulgarian.
Stefanos Tsitsipas also had to dig deep to survive against lucky loser Patrick Kypson, while a few qualifiers and home players picked up solid wins.

The biggest upset of the day. The 21-year-old Paraguayan qualifier stunned the former World No. 3 on his Masters 1000 main-draw debut.
Vallejo becomes just the second Paraguayan ever to win a match at this level (after Ramon Delgado). He called it “like a movie” afterwards and jumped to No. 84 in the live rankings. Next: Learner Tien.
Dimitrov is in a bit of a crisis now as his ranking slips to outside the Top 150, and he’s only won 2 of his 10 matches this season.
Stefanos Tsitsipas def. Patrick Kypson (LL) 3-6 7-6(6) 7-6(4)
The Greek survived a massive scare. Down a set and two points from defeat in the second-set tiebreak, Tsitsipas rallied to win two tight tiebreaks and snap a three-match losing streak.
He’ll face eighth seed Alexander Bublik next, which I don’t see him winning, as he’s still not playing well.
Camilo Ugo Carabelli def. Gaël Monfils (WC) 6-3 6-4
Straight-sets win for the Argentine over the veteran wildcard. Monfils looked flat on clay, while Ugo Carabelli was clinical. Probably a waste of a wildcard as Monfils has never done well in Madrid.
Vilius Gaubas (Q) def. Sebastián Báez 7-5 6-1
Impressive upset by the young Lithuanian qualifier. He dominated the second set after a tight opener against the consistent clay-courter Báez. I am not sure why but European clay isn’t a happy hunting ground for the Argentine.
Pablo Carreño Busta (WC) def. Márton Fucsovics 4-6 7-6(5) 6-2
The Spanish veteran earned his first Madrid win in 10 years after rallying from a set down in front of the home crowd.
Daniel Mérida def. Marco Trungelliti 6-4 1-6 7-6(6)
This was easily the most dramatic and spicy match of the day. Funnily enough, it was a rematch from qualifying just two days earlier (where Mérida had already beaten Trungelliti).
The Argentine came in as a lucky loser and pushed the local Spanish qualifier all the way, serving for the match at 6-5 in the third. He held two match points at 40-15, but Mérida saved both to force a tiebreak.
The tiebreak was chaotic: Trungelliti saved four match points before finally falling on the fifth. The crowd was heavily involved throughout, booing and getting on the Argentine’s back, which led to heated moments. Trungelliti even stopped play to complain to the supervisor about the atmosphere.
