Interim Dragons coach Dean Young says young halfback is not a ‘saviour’
Interim Dragons coach Dean Young has just spoken to Fox League, ahead of this afternoon’s blockbuster against the Sydney Roosters.
There is a lot of focus on Kade Reed, who is making his NRL debut as the Dragons’ starting halfback.
Young says he has left Reed alone this week ahead of his debut, but also made it clear that victory today must be a team effort.
“I can tell you one thing, Kade Reed isn’t a Dragons’ saviour,” Young says.
“The 16 players that go on the field next to him today need to do their job, and Kade will be able to do his.”

ANALYSIS: Shane Flanagan’s sacking is the same old story for St George Illawarra
Was there a bigger story in the NRL this week than the Dragons parting ways with Shane Flanagan as coach?
The Red V have lost all seven matches in 2026, and they are on an 11-game losing streak dating to last year.
The parting way with Flanagan, and the poor performances on the field, are part of an all too familiar story for the joint venture, writes ABC Sport’s Nick Campton.

Kade Reed makes NRL debut on Anzac Day
All eyes are on the St George Illawarra number seven.
(AAP)
Kade Reed is a 20-year-old making his debut on Anzac Day.
After former coach Shane Flanagan and the Dragons parted ways at the start of the week, interim coach Dean Young has thrown the 20-year-old straight into the side.
He replaces Kyle Flanagan, Shane’s son, as the starting halfback.
It is a mighty arena for this man to step into. He made his NSW Cup debut late last year, and he has played three matches in that competition this season.
