Ross Lyon’s enthusiasm over his side’s emphatic victory – and Max King’s potential return – wasn’t as strong as that of the St Kilda faithful.

Despite claiming a 101-point win over West Coast, Lyon continued to limit his word count in press conferences after recent criticism of his tone when speaking to the media.

“It doesn’t hurt,” a coy Lyon said of King’s looming inclusion.

He also refused to accept that its first triple-figure victory in 11 seasons was a significant moment.

“I think there’s bigger challenges in the AFL with, with all due respect,” he said.

“We don’t see it as a four quarter performance. We see it as three.

“We thought our Q3 we didn’t like, but there was stability in our game in the other three quarters, so we will move on pretty quick.

“It’s great to see the fans, sponsors, board members and family in the rooms with a smile, getting reward for effort, so that doesn’t hurt.

“It is nice to crack through that glass ceiling.

“At the end of the day, you want to come here and get the four points and leave healthy and play positive football.”

After not winning a third quarter until today, Lyon said there was no one reason as to why St Kilda’s this quarter continued to be its worst.

“There’s a whole bunch of things to be honest,” he said.

“What has there been, seven third quarters?

“I remember doing quantitative studies and I think a significant sample size is 30 to be meaningful, but there’s smarter people than me who could determine that.”

Hugo Garcia’s impact could certainly be measured as meaningful, with the budding midfielder playing his best game for the club from a 33-game sample size.

“He works really hard, he got reward for effort,” Lyon said.

“He certainly played his part.

“Hopefully it fuels his dedication and his passion for AFL football.”

It wasn’t only Garcia, but home-grown talent in Darcy Wilson, Mattaes Phillipou and Marcus Windhager who helped propel the Saints to victory alongside Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera.

Ross Lyon labelled them ‘win builders’.

“We’ve done a lot of heavy lifting here, gone from the fifth oldest to going to the draft a fair bit,” he said.

“I just see them as positive people that can contribute to the team, potentially wind builders.

“It’s good growth for Darcy (Wilson) and Hugo (Garcia) for sure, and they’re really good mates.”

Lance Collard is another potential win-builder who was the subject of a lengthy tribunal process following the use of a homophobic slur in the VFL.

The AFL sacked the chair of its appeals board Will Houghton KC after his findings in the case were widely criticised.

Ross Lyon refused to weigh in on his sacking.

“I haven’t got a view on it, I just acknowledge the decision, look after Lance and prepare Lance for football,” he said.

“No view.”

He did, however, have a view on the controversial in-game score review that granted Rowan Marshall a shot on goal.

“I think it’s best intentions,” he said.

“So when people have the best intentions, I don’t think we should undermine it.”
