Royce Gracie, the legendary mixed martial artist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu pioneer, will travel to the city for a special evening at Impact MMA.

The event will take place on Friday, June 5, at Impact Martial Arts’ academy on Lancaster Road, Old Sarum, with arrivals from 6 pm and a prompt start at 6.30 pm.

Royce Gracie is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of combat sports. He shot to international fame in 1993 after winning the first-ever Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), submitting all three opponents in a single night and demonstrating to the world the effectiveness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu against larger and stronger fighters.

His success played a major role in shaping modern mixed martial arts, placing grappling and ground fighting at the heart of MMA training worldwide.

Now, Salisbury residents and martial arts enthusiasts have the rare opportunity to train with and learn from the UFC Hall of Famer in person.

The visit came about through an unexpected meeting overseas. Joe Taylor, head coach at Impact MMA in Salisbury, met Royce Gracie by chance while on holiday in Cyprus. Gracie was teaching as part of a martial arts retreat at the same hotel where Joe was staying.

Spotting the opportunity to learn from one of his lifelong heroes, Joe joined the sessions on the mats.

Following conversations during the trip, the idea of Gracie visiting Salisbury quickly gathered momentum. Within days, plans were agreed, and the visit was confirmed.

Speaking about the event, Impact MMA said it was “an incredible opportunity” not just for members of the gym, but for the wider community.

The evening is open to everyone, with no previous experience required. Organisers say all ages and ability levels are welcome, whether attendees are seasoned martial artists or complete beginners curious to learn from a true legend of the sport. Places are limited, and advance booking is required.

Impact Martial Arts Salisbury is an independently run mixed martial arts academy established in 2012, offering training in MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing, Muay Thai and wrestling for adults and children. The gym has built a strong reputation locally for its inclusive approach, community focus and youth programmes.

Located at Unit 2, Lancaster Road, Old Sarum, the academy regularly hosts visiting coaches and seminars, but organisers say a visit from Royce Gracie is “something truly special.”
