The programme includes guided rides, community events, workshops and local activations around Kilbirnie and Evans Bay, and Mayor Andrew Little is encouraging more people to give cycling a go in this fun, low-pressure, supportive environment.
“Bike the Bays is about showing that cycling in Wellington can be for everyone and to build confidence among those who don’t cycle often. Getting out on two wheels is an enjoyable way to see your neighbourhood in a different way,” says the Mayor.
The programme is particularly aimed at people who are curious about cycling but may lack confidence, as well as those who haven’t ridden in years, or are looking to get fit or for a more social way to get around.
Events include:
There will also be discounts on e-bike hire and free resources to help people plan their rides and build confidence.
Councillor Laurie Foon says there really isn’t a better time to take up riding a bike, and this event is a great way to start.
“With the environment and cost of living top of mind for many households, cycling is a simple and low-cost way to get around that is good on the wallet, your wellbeing and the world. This is a chance for people to try it out in a ‘wheely’ welcoming way!”
Bike the Bays runs throughout May, with events happening across the eastern suburbs. Full programme and bookings available at wellington.govt.nz/bike-the-bays
